| 1 Day Depart
Durban 08h00 to drive 2 hours North West
on the N3 to arrive at the site of Winston
Churchill’s capture by the Boers.
Your specialist battlefield guide will
give you background to the outbreak of the
Anglo Boer war (1899 to 1902) and relate
the story of Churchill’s capture.
We then drive about half an hour to the
summit of Spioenkop, which is known by some
as the most spectacular battlefield site
in the world.
The Battle between the Boers and the British
in January 1900 was fought on about an acre
of ground on top of this flat-topped mountain
1500 feet above the Tugela River.
The story of the battle is exciting, with
many incidents of heroism and heartbreak
as both sides fought themselves to a standstill
believing that the other side had won.
There were three men on top of this mountain
who were to become world renowned figures:
Winston Churchill, Mahatma Ghandi and Louis
Botha, first prime minister of South Africa.
There were so many brave Lancashire soldiers
that lost their lives on Spioenkop (Spy
Hill) that one end of Anfield football ground
is called “The Kop” to this
day.
The views of the surrounding countryside
are dramatic and the Drakensberg Mountains
form a spectacular backdrop to the drama
of battle. It is an expedition that is not
to be missed as even those not interested
in military history will enjoy the passion
and the drama, as well as the scenery.
