4 Days / 3 Nights
Day One
Drive from Durban following the route taken
by Lord Chelmsford when he invaded Zululand
in 1879. The afternoon is spent at Talana
museum for background to our tour pertaining
to the foundation of the rainbow nation
that is South Africa today; before driving
to our accommodation for the night, either
overlooking the battlefield or near Dundee.

Day Two
Today we cover the Zulu nation and their
clashes with the British. We visit Isandlwana
where 1329 well equipped British soldiers
were slaughtered during a well-orchestrated
Zulu attack. From there we drive to Fugitive
Drift where we tell of the heroic saving
of the Queen’s Colour. We then, later
that afternoon, spend time at Rorke’s
Drift where a handful of brave British soldiers
defended the post against the onslaught
of 4000 attacking Zulu warriors. Overnight
overlooking the battlefield or near Dundee.

Day Three
We move on to Ladysmith to cover the Anglo-Boer
War of 1899 – 1902, starting off with
a discussion on the origins of this war
from the vantage point of Platrand, which
has a bird's eye view over the town. The
siege of Ladysmith is also briefly covered
before driving down into the town itself
and spending a little while in the excellent
Museum. After lunch we drive south to the
tiny town of Colenso, situated on the banks
of the Tugela River. It was here that the
British army, under General Sir Redvers
Buller, made its first and unsuccessful
attempt to break through the Boer line in
order to relieve the British garrison at
Ladysmith.
Overnight nearby.
Day Four
This morning we visit the summit of Spioenkop
Mountain. This blood soaked acre is the
battlefield site where the British made
a second attempt to break through the Boer
lines to reach Ladysmith. En route back
to Durban, we will stop at the site of the
capture of Winston Churchill on the armoured
train.
